Forgiveness…what does this have to do with weight gain, “catching” a cold, or the food you eat?
Have you ever downed an entire bag of chips, crackers, or cookies? Ate pizza or cake until you felt sick? Drank more coffee or wine than your body wanted? (This feels familiar to me).
Do you remember how you were feeling at the time?
I ask because sometimes we overeat to help distract us from emotional pain. Think about it…have you noticed that sometimes when you overeat you’re not hungry at all? What you are is lonely. Or angry. Or sad. Or resentful. Or frustrated. Or something else. When we hold onto this resentment, pain, disappointment, anger, grief, and so forth; we become bogged down. Our bodies find it nearly impossible to keep up with all this anxiety.
The most common stress-induced eating habits are not drinking enough water, fast food, grazing or mindless eating, eating junk food, or skipping meals altogether.
You can experience blood sugar fluctuations if you don’t eat enough food with proper nutrients. These fluctuations can lead to bigger health problems like fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, memory lapses, insomnia, and possible hyperglycemia if prolonged. Poor nutrition can lead to lowered immunity making you more susceptible to illnesses.
So what hurt are YOU holding on to? We all have something or someone that has hurt us. This hurt can last for as long as we let it.
Let’s Tap Into the Power of Forgiveness
Wouldn’t it be more effective to address your uncomfortable feelings? The best, most thorough, most divinely perfect way to do that is forgiveness.
Forgiving is not easy, even for the most enlightened among us. If you’ve been allowing your present health to be controlled by past hurts, I urge you to commit to forgiving. It’s hard, for real. Sometimes the thought of forgiving someone causes more anxiety for us. It is essential to our own well-being to let go of these harsh feelings. These steps can help:
· Talk to sympathetic friends and family about your desire to forgive. Chatting with others is tremendously comforting.
· Write a letter to the person you’d like to forgive. You can decide whether or not you send it. Sometimes, the people we need to forgive have no clue they have hurt you.
· See the situation from the other person’s perspective—your own perspective may change.
· Don’t forget to forgive yourself. Sometimes we can be harshest with ourselves. We often don't realize that we are our own enemies and will self-sabotage with the best of them.(me)
· Understand that you are responsible for your own attitude. Don’t let holding a grudge keep you from feeling free, open, and powerful in your own life.
